This guide is designed to provide some basic dietary tips to help you manage your Type 2 diabetes if you are not in stable accommodation but do have access to an oven, hob and fridge.

- Try using sweeteners or ‘half and half’ instead of sugar in your tea and coffee
- Below are some food options that can help you manage your diabetes and what can make it worse
Better food options if you have Type 2 Diabetes
Meals Ideas: • Stir fry vegetables with any meat and noodles ( ¼ standard 26cm plate portion) or rice ( ¼ plate portion) • Dahl made with lentils and any meat or fish and any vegetables (excluding potato or other root vegetable) • Any meat or vegetarian curry (made without potato or root vegetables) with cooked rice ( ¼ plate portion) or 1 large pitta bread or 1 medium chapatti or roti • One baked potato (palm sized) with beans or cheese or tuna with salad or cooked vegetables • Pasta ( ¼ plate portion) and bolognaise sauce with minced meat and vegetables • New potatoes ( ¼ plate portion) with vegetables or salad and any cooked meat or fish or vegetarian alternative • ‘Spanish’ omelette or Frittata made with 3 eggs and milk and any mixed vegetables or meat and/or cheese. Small portion of new potatoes or rice ( ¼ plate) if desired • A healthy options single portion ready meal that can be cooked in the oven, with additional green vegetables • A meat/cheese/egg ‘toasty’ (2 slices of wholemeal bread medium thickness) with a side salad • 1 Large tortilla with pan fried meat and vegetables with a tomato based salsa and optional cheese • Any canned soup (except potato based) with 1-2 slices of wholemeal or seeded bread (medium thickness) • Rice and peas/beans ( ¼ plate portion of brown or basmati rice) with green salad and a meat and vegetable based curry or sauce |
To be avoided if possible if you have Type 2 Diabetes
Meals To Avoid: • Meals that only consist of carbohydrates (starchy foods) such as potato, pasta, rice etc. • Meals that consist of very large portions of carbohydrates as above • Meals that have sauces that you think may be very sugary such as sweet chilli or sweet and sour.
