The 2018 East End Health Network Health Fair at the Idea Store Whitechapel was an even bigger success than the previous year as large crowds of local residents and visitors to the borough participated in a host of health workshops, health checks, massage and advice from stalls promoting services by organisations like the Alzheimer’s Society and Social Action for Health.
Workshops were held covering Diabetes in Ramadan, Sexual Health and Health Eating and Exercise, the turnout was great with the workshop hall fully packed, it helped residents better understand Health implications and how to better manage their own health. The Mile End based Diabetes Centre were on hand to deliver a well received educational session in English and Bengali, residents also took part in a question and answer session where they had plenty to ask about how to manage their diabetes during Ramadan. Barts Health and Positive East both co-delivered the Sexual Health workshop to discuss issues around Sexually transmitted infection screening and the use of contraception. The final workshop for the event was rounded off with an exciting and engaging session from Social Action for Health Good Moves where patients learnt about the do's and don'ts of healthy eating along with a quick guide to gentle exercise at home.
There were over 20 stalls from local community voluntary sector informing, educating and publicising their service to residents and the overall feedback from residents was that the wide range of health areas covered was very helpful and the stall holders were welcoming and engaging. We recived a lot of positive feedback and have listed a small sample of them here:

Health Fair Participants
EEHN Chair Dr Anwara Ali MBE commented, “The East End Health Network was formed in 2009 in response to the reorganisation of delivery of primary care within Tower Hamlets and the development of eight Networks mirroring the LAPs in the Borough. It’s wonderful to see so many faces both old and new, and I’m proud of the role we play in highlighting and promoting health to the good citizens of our borough and beyond.”
Social Prescriber Sham Zaman added, “We are very pleased with the turnout today and it demonstrates the importance our community places on health issues. It’s great that we are able to be of assistance and help increase knowledge and awareness.”
Network manager Ashraf Ullah concluded, “The turnout this year has exceeded last year and with our dedicated team and volunteers and with the support of our partners I can see us delivering bigger and better events in the future.”
The main sponsor for the event at Whitechapel Idea Store this year was Stirling Ackroyd Legal, whose representatives were in attendance to witness the popularity of the event. Special thanks were reserved for the property law specialists who have an office in Whitechapel.
The event finished off with a free raffle draw with health related prizes on offer, there were 4 prize winners who were all locally registered patients of EEHN GP Surgeries.
